#Win a Paperback of #BlackWidow by Jennifer Estep ~ 12th novel in the Elemental Assassin series

Black Widow, Book 12 in Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series, released on November 25.

To celebrate, I've teamed up with Simon & Schuster for a release day extravaganza that includes a Giveaway!!

Anyone who has been following my blogs knows that I love the Elemental Assassin series.  I didn't start reading it when it was first released but I'm making up for it now.  You can read my reviews of Books 1-5 by clicking the following links:

Spider's Bite, Book 1:

Web of Lies, Book 2:

Venom, Book 3:

Tangled Threads, Book 4:

Spider's Revenge, Book 5:

As soon as I have time, Book 6 will be requested from my local library and I'll again get lost in the world of Gin and her friends.

So, what is Black Widow all about?

There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan. With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bull’s-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

Guest Appearance - Arielle Strauss, Author of The Wraith Trilogy " #NaNoWriMo ... With A Twist"

Let's give a warm welcome to Arielle Strauss as she visits us today!

NaNoWriMo...With A Twist

I always admired people who successfully completed National Novel Writing Month. I mean, to write an entire 50,000 word novel in 30 days is hugely impressive. But what if you only had 28 days? And it had to be a young adult paranormal romance novel?

February is Antwinowrimo, Anti Twilight Novel Writing Month. Now, don't get me wrong; I read the complete Twilight Saga. And I enjoyed it. Yes, there were aspects of the series I didn't appreciate, but as a whole I had a great deal of fun reading those books. The challenge of Antwinowrimo is to write a novel that's better. On February 1st 2010, I began to attempt this crazy task.

I had no idea what I wanted to write about at first. I figured since there were so many stories about vampires and wolves, I would write a story about a ghost. Her name would be Ophelia, after the Shakespearean heroine. And her love interest would be a living girl she met at school. To this day, I've never read a young adult paranormal romance novel where the lead character is bisexual. Sure, I've seen bisexuality represented in television and in movies, but never in the form of a book geared toward people my own age. So I wrote Ophelia in the hopes that young people like her might finally see themselves represented.

Let me tell you, the first draft of this book is vastly different from the published version. I wrote "The Wraith" my freshman year of college. It was published three months after I graduated. Needless to say, the editing process was a long one. But during those four years, I completed the trilogy as schoolwork.

If you're a creative writing student, I urge you to try and convince your professors to oversee the projects you want to focus on. I know I wouldn't have come as far as publishing if my professors hadn't lent me their guidance every step of the way. "TheWraith" is a story of a tortured soul who comes to find love and meaning all around her. I hope you enjoy the first two books. Book 3 will arrive before you know it!

The Wraith - Ophelia Weller never believed in ghosts until the night she became one. Now a wraith, Ophelia is a spirit hidden amongst the living. Forced to conceal her undead identity from the world, and struggling to remain visible to the humans around her, how will she ever manage to convince her dearest friend of the truth? Or muster the courage to tell her beautiful gym partner that she just may be in love with her? And, with no memory of her death, how will Ophelia solve the mystery of her murder?

Read an Excerpt:

I was drifting, unaware of the passage of time. Slowly I returned to consciousness, welcoming it as one reborn. My mind once again filled with thoughts and sensations; my eyelids fluttered open involuntarily. I saw looming trees above me, stars in the sky. It was bitter cold out here. Here…I didn't know where here was. I came to understand that I was sprawled limply on the ground, hot with a sticky wetness beneath certain areas of my body. My body…I was completely nude.

Shifting into an upright position, I felt the wind around me pick up and rustle my hair. The ground was warm and damp where I'd left it. How long I'd been lying there, I couldn't be sure. I placed both my palms on the ground and pushed myself to my feet. Shivering, I covered my exposed midriff with my arms only to find them ice cold. I dropped them immediately. Needless to say, I needed clothes. But...what had I been wearing before? I couldn't recall any of the events that had brought me to this place of trees and dim starlight. That's a scary thought: being lost and naked and not knowing how you came to a place or how long you'd been there. But it was nothing compared to the barely illuminated sight on the ground before me. There lay something so putrid and repulsive that I screamed with a force I never knew I had in me.

I was standing near the lifeless body of a young girl.

The corpse was as naked as I. It lay in a mangled, bloody heap inches away from my bare feet. After sinking back down to the dampened ground, it took every ounce of willpower I had not to let myself vomit. I had to get away. I knew it. But I couldn't budge. With shaking fingers, I reached out to wipe the matted, reddish-blonde hair from the girl's petrified face. I was staring into my own eyes.

It took me about a minute to comprehend this. I looked at my hands. I felt my hair, my face, and every inch of my body. I was still in my own skin, but this…this thing was a perfect twin. She radiated some warmth, and her face was mine. Her entire body was like mine—exactly like mine—except for the stab wounds all over hers. There was a white sticky substance in the pubic area, which led me to believe she'd been raped. That I'd been raped.

Read the Early Praise for Cowboy Heat:

Praise for Ivy League Cowboy

These two are downright lovable! You are rooting for them to get together from the get go. The chemistry between them is smoking HOT, and…once they get in bed you will need a fan.
~Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Holy smokes, that was hot. This is a true erotic romance. There's a lot of sex, but it was there for a reason… I cried twice (not in a bad way) and had quite a few hearty chuckles at the subtle humor… I got my tidy happily-ever-after ending and stayed up until 4:45 a.m. to get it. I read this through in one sitting, and started the spin-off, A Cowboy and a Gentleman, at 4:46… Helen Hardt isn't a one-trick pony: where Ivy League Cowboy has an underlying sweetness to it, A Cowboy and a Gentleman crackles with the fire of attraction between a more mature couple and has a lot more situational humor.
~Award Winning Author Holley Trent

Fast-paced and sensual, this story is a nice rainy-day read while you’re snuggled up next to your partner.
~Bibliophilic Book Blog

Praise for A Cowboy and a Gentlemen

This is a wonderful book! It has it all! It is so hot at times you feel like your e-reader just might melt and it also gets all your emotions involved… I could not stop reading it till I was finished.
~Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Heartbreaking, yet sensual and explosive, A Cowboy and a Gentleman is a true love story with real emotional depth and character development.
~Bibliophilic Book Blog

A yummy cowboy and a saucy Jersey girl make up this fun couple, and their chemistry is easy to believe. Both divorced, they each have pasts that they must overcome in order to move forward and love again. It was easy to cheer for both of them… The small town setting of Bakersville adds to this book’s appeal.

Jenny’s thoughts returned to Gavin. She kicked Balfour’s sides, and the horse trotted down the narrow trail. A few beams of morning light penetrated the crown of gold, red, and yellow leaves, and she regretted that within a month, every leaf would turn brown and drop from the trees. Some dried leaves littered the trail, and she prayed the older Sinclair wasn’t near enough to hear them crunch beneath her horse’s hooves.

Rounding a corner, Gavin and his horse, Falcon, blocked their path. When she reined in Balfour, Jaden-Tog leaned to the side, and peeked around Jenny.

Gavin growled. “Ye found a companion, I see.”

“He’s hurt. He fought against your father, so I could escape.”

“Aye. Ye were nowhere to be found, young laird,” Jaden-Tog added, his tone low and accusatory.

Gavin’s aura morphed into a brilliant violet, like that of a humble man filled more with compassion, or gratitude, than anger. It was a much better look on him.

“I was…never ye mind. If ye shall assist me, we shall capture my sire, and return him to Tulac Castle. Will ye help us?”

Jenny saw the hope in his eyes tinged with envy. Did he think the brownie was enjoying riding so close to her? “He needs medical help, so let’s find Dorcas, before you make any plans to kidnap anyone.”

“Kidnap? Ye mean abduct, or capture, aye?”

“Aye,” she mimicked. “Let’s go.”

Read an Excerpt:

Almost everyone in the store had a phone. Dormant devices, from reading lights to mobile chargers, littered the tables. One woman, browsing books nearby, had four battery-powered devices in her purse. One was a phone, and like mine, it hungered. Its need was strong; its battery waned to the point of failure. If I wanted, I could charge it for her. No one would notice if I did. Maybe the woman would wonder how her phone hadn’t died before she got home. It only had a few minutes left. It’d take me all of ten seconds to fix it for her. If I did, I wouldn’t be so aware of it. But to do so, I’d have to touch her—or her phone. Some things I could manipulate without having a direct conduit, but cell phone batteries were tricky, greedy things. I cringed a little, setting the thriller book down. I picked up the next nearest title. I flipped it over, not reading the text on the back. Did I dare? Out of the corner of my eye, I watched the woman browsing through the books. All it would take was a few seconds. I could charge it without her noticing. That was one thing I was actually good at. I put the novel I held down and wandered to the same table, careful not to look at her. Book by book, I investigated the titles, circling to where she stood. “You’re Nicole Thomas, aren’t you? The actress. You’re her.” My quarry appraised me with a pleased expression. People normally recognized the mainliners, people with beautiful faces and voices to match, people who didn’t avoid crowds. In short, people other than me. I met her gaze, abandoning my perusal of novels. “I am,” I replied, wincing a little at the sandpaper-rough quality of my voice. At least I hadn’t been reduced to a whisper—yet. My fatal flaw was my rough, grating voice. Chronic laryngitis did that to a person. It ruined careers, as it had mine, though I hadn’t quite given up on being an actress. I’d already lost the ability to sing. I wasn’t going to let a stupid disease take everything away from me. The woman smiled, not seeming to mind talking to someone who sounded more like a zombie than a human. “You’re taller than I expected. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She thrust out her hand. We shook. I left her phone alone. “They keep putting me next to giants,” I quipped. It was true. When I did manage to get on the silver screen, I worked alongside actors easily a foot-and-a-half taller than me. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too.” I matched her smile. She didn’t tell me her name, and I didn’t ask for it. It took all of my will not to fiddle with her phone. All it would take was a murmured word and a thought, and it’d be done. It would have been easy to charge the battery when our hands had been clasped together, but I hadn’t dared. If, sometime later, she noticed her phone had magically been charged—literally—she might remember me. She knew my name. And in true cowardice, I couldn’t bring myself to help her. If she connected the strange behavior of her phone with me, she might tell someone. If she did, I’d be as good as dead—or worse. I had dabbled in the occult, and the occult had dabbled back, and there were those who didn’t like when that happened. The last thing I needed was them finding me. Excerpt I slammed my car’s door, spun on a heel, and swore I would have a perfectly normal visit to the mall. All I needed was one little book. Even I could walk into a bookstore, pick up a novel, and leave without causing any trouble. This time, I wouldn’t blow out the lights. There wouldn’t be a single power surge. I wouldn’t turn on every unplugged device in the electronics store on my way across the mall. In the ten minutes it would take me to get in and out, the only thing anyone would notice about me was the fact that I wore a high-collared sweater in late summer. I had a mission, and I would complete it without fail. The novel my agent insisted I read would be mine. For a long moment, I considered turning around and getting back into my car. Dominic would forgive me if I didn’t start reading the book until tomorrow. I could call in a favor and ask someone to pick up a copy for me. Then I definitely wouldn’t run any risk of blowing anything up. If I had been smart, I would’ve just ordered the damned thing on the internet, but I had waited too long. Fishing my cell out of my pocket, I unlocked the screen with a swipe of my finger. The charging icon mocked me. Despite running every battery-draining app I could find, the battery held a full charge. I opened another app, a devilish program capable of killing the battery in ten minutes. It wouldn’t, not with me around, but if I was too busy keeping my phone topped up, maybe my mall shopping trip would prove to be mundane. I shook my head, laughing at my foolishness. No one would notice my phone. No one would notice me for more than a second. They’d notice my clothes, and then they’d file me away as yet another weirdo wearing something strange to catch attention. L.A. was full of people like that. I had no reason to worry. Even if I managed to embarrass myself yet again by losing control of my powers, no one would know I was the cause of unplugged electronics turning on or unusual power surges. Straightening my shoulders, I fixed my eyes on the line of glass doors and marched my way across the parking lot. In and out. No blown lights. No power surges. No feeding power to unplugged electrical devices. No charging batteries for strangers. I was in control, and I would charge only my phone. Making my way to the entry, I paused long enough to hold the door for a little old lady who insisted on making her way through the regular doors despite her walker. I couldn’t blame her. If I lived to be her age, I wouldn’t want to rely on automatic doors either. She thanked me with a pat on the arm. Flashing her my best smile, I slipped inside. Nothing happened. Perfect. I could handle ten minutes in the crowded corridors. Maybe if I told myself that enough times, I’d believe it.

"What if your choices had eternal ramification?" ~ Deceived (Soul Keepers, Book 1) by L.A. Starkey (A Goddess Fish Promotions Event) #Giveaway

About Deceived:

They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principal, the actuating cause of an individual life.

But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?

The soul mate principal states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.

But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?

What if your choices had eternal ramification?

Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what's to come.

Read an Excerpt:

Maybe reading the prophecy out loud and a little slower might actually help me decipher its meaning. Samantha exhaled loudly and began.

“In a battle of wills,
of the gods of old.
For each his revenge,
will he forfeit his soul.

On the chess board of blood,
will their narrative play.
aged, innocent lives,
revenge claims her way.

Out of hate will come love,
and love will come hate.
For immortal and man,
have entwined their damned fate.

As the time draws near,
a soul mate will speak,
And invoke its commencement,
when strong will fall weak,

And the child in the middle,
will break the seal
That is held by the fate,
who's heart cannot heal.

With death sets in motion,
a prophecy of old
Ergo seeker of heart,
and keeper of soul.

"One heart with two parts,
split between twins,
two bodies that hold,
one despondent young man.

As the battle ensues,
against himself he will stand,
her pendulum swings,
with balance in hand.

For this generation,
will affect us all,
for the same man will rise,
but he also will fall."

Sam stopped at the end of the prophecy, the room much cooler.

Kayli Winchester is a dirt-poor girl living out of a hotel, forced to be the parent for a drunken father and teenage brother who she’s desperate to keep in school. The only way she scrapes by is to utilize her one skill: pickpocketing. But even though she’s a thief she has a moral code: no kids or old ladies, only targets who can defend themselves. Not that they see her coming...

Thinking she’s been working under the radar, Kayli has no idea The Academy has been watching and taking notice. Now a team that needs her skill has offered her a way out of her predicament and it’s her last chance: work with them, or face jail time. Kayli resists at first, but slowly the boys reveal they can be trusted. With Marc, the straight man, Raven, the bad-boy Russian, Corey and Brandon the twins as different as night and day, and Axel their stoic leader, there’s a lot Kayli can learn from these Academy guys about living on the edge of the law. If only she can stay on the good side instead of the bad.

Especially when the job they offer her is more than any of them bargained for. After it’s done, the hunters have become the hunted and their target is now after Kayli. The Academy boys do their best to keep her hidden, but a thief like Kayli will never sit still for long.

Meet an all-new Academy team in Thief, the beginning of the Scarab Beetle series.

“I don’t know what you want me to do,” I said, but my voice was nearly gone, thick with the fear that he was way too close and seemed to think he knew what I wanted. I didn’t want him to know he was right. I don’t know why. My pride was too strong. I’d been this way for so long, I didn’t know how to give in. I didn’t know how to trust.

He opened his mouth, like he wanted to say something else but stopped, and his eyes drifted down to my mouth and held. My breath caught in my throat.

Before I could think to even push him off, his mouth claimed me. He kissed me hard enough that my head pressed back into the wall. His hands slid back to cup around my jaw to keep me from pulling away. His lips pressed down, mouth parted.

I kissed him back. I don’t know what came over me, but I wanted to feel those promises. I wanted to believe, for the moment, that maybe I could just let go, like he said, and trust that I could be accepted for who I was. Was I just like him? Could I be like that? Could I find a place just for me among these guys and waltz in and be with them? I opened my mouth, inviting him in, just a little.

Like opening the gates, his mouth claimed me again. In every possible place I could think to hide, he found me. My mind blanked out. I didn’t have room for anything else other than him and his kiss that told me everything would be all right. His kiss sank into me over and over again. Lips pressed against mine, tugging at my skin, at heart strings, at my core.

When he finally released my mouth so I could breathe, his lips trailed over my face, across my eyes and my brows.

“Why did it have to be you?” He breathed out as he whispered against my face. “I was hunting a thief, and I found a beautiful wreck.”

Review: Hellish Haven by L.K. Below #Dystopian #Giftcard #Giveaway #excerpt

About Hellish Haven:

Two lives. Two realities. But only one truth.

The Senator reigns all-powerful in a manifested picture-perfect world. No worries. No wars. Only the unspoken threat of oblivion if you step a toe out of line. On the other side of the divide, the rebels face a debilitating war against an invulnerable robotic army. Every day is a struggle to earn back their freedoms. Freedom to feel. Freedom of speech. Freedom of thought.

Sergeant Grant Baker is pivotal to the war effort. But ever since his wife’s abduction, he’s been walking around in as much of a daze as the Senator’s brainwashed citizens. Then Eva reappears—without memories of him or their son. And he’s willing to do anything to keep her. Even if it means jeopardizing the war.

Eva doesn’t know which side to believe. Her predictable life as a single nurse, or the man claiming to be her husband. All she knows is she needs to discover how to end the war, quickly. If she doesn’t choose sides soon, she may lose the man—and the life—she never knew she wanted.

Sapphyria's Review:

What would you do if your missing wife suddenly reappeared but didn't know you or her son?  This is the situation that Sargent Grant Baker faces while protecting his people on the war-side of the divide.

In what appears to be a post-apocalyptic world, the reader actually realizes that they are in a world dominated by one ruler - after freedoms were abolished one at a time.  Grant lives in one of very few (and could quite possibly be the only) remaining rebel zones on the very border of the near perfect new world order.  Struggling for every means of survival from the army of robots sent to destroy them, all the "defiant" citizens continue to fight to regain their lives from a totalitarian regime.

This new world is ruled with an iron fist and a very unethical method of brainwashing.  Propaganda blasts from all media outlets, which are also completely regulated by a ruler known at the Senator.  Unfortunately for Grant, Eva, the wife he thought was dead is actually very much alive, a victim of the new world order and a personal "friend" of the Senator.

When Eva is dropped back in his lap, literally, Grant is elated yet saddened.  His wife, and the mother of his child, is back and she appears safe and healthy.  Except, she doesn't have any memories of the last several years and Grant and Miguel are unknown to her.  And when she proves to be a traitor, all bets are off.

Or are they?

This is a short little novella that doesn't hold back.  The hows and whys of the current situation are provided but with just enough information to bring the reader up to speed.  We aren't inundated with a bunch of useless filler or useless details.  Hellish Haven is quite descriptive and done well - I felt I was in the war zone and, later on, in the perfectly created world run by the Senator.

Grant and Eva are well written characters.  Grant is written with depth and emotion along with strength and determination.  He never really gives up hope that he'll find Eva.  His interactions with his son are priceless and so tender.  His love for Eva is very evident from the start.  Eva is conflicted.  She has no recollection of Grant, Miguel, or what has happened to the world she now resides in; all she remembers is the perfect home, job, and life she's been living.  She doesn't even know how she ended up in the home on the other side of the divide - yet she recognizes parts of the apartment.

Hellish Haven is engaging and keeps the reader interested.  Highly recommended if you're looking for a quick yet action filled novella.

Sapphyria's Rating:

Read an Excerpt from Hellish Haven:

Acting as vanguard for the injured squad, Grant turned a corner and froze. A hulky man carried a limp woman over his shoulder.

Grant automatically reached for his gun. Even if they weren’t yet across the divide, he couldn’t stand idle as a man accosted a woman. Or worse. He aimed the rifle at the criminal. “Set her down nice and easy.”

The man froze. He glanced over one meaty shoulder, his unshaven mouth set in a scowl.

“Set her down, or I’ll shoot.”

A gold tooth flashed as the criminal grinned. He hurled the small woman at Grant and dashed for the slim space between two buildings.

Grant moved without thinking. His gun clattered to the ground as he lunged forward to catch the woman before she split her head open on the sidewalk. He grunted as he caught her with her weight against his bruised forearms. He shot a flickering glance her way. A riot of brown curls obscured her face. He set her gently on the ground.

He dashed for the opening the shady figure had disappeared into, but saw no sight of the man. The delinquent was long gone.

Ashland panted as he jogged to Grant’s side. “What happened?”

If Grant never heard that question again, it would be too soon. He shook his head wearily. “Mugging, I guess.”

“They still have those here? I thought the Senator brought an end to violence.” Ashland drew sarcastic quotes in the air as he spoke.

Grant didn’t bother to answer. He turned to the woman and where his squad was now gathered. A horrified private glanced from the woman to Grant and back again. “What do you want us to do with her…sir?”

If they left her, the Senator’s people might find her and stick her back in the pen with the rest of their brainwashed sheep. Then again, that same goon might double back to continue what he started.

He crossed to the woman and crouched to lift her into his arms. Her tangled hair fell away from her face. He nearly dropped her. “Eva?”

Frantically, he pressed his ear to her chest. Her breathing was shallow, but her heartbeat steady and strong. He clutched her tighter. He couldn’t believe it.

He’d found his wife.

The blood in her mouth tasted like hot pennies.
Flinching as a secondary arterial spray lashed her face, she kept her fingers clenched in her tormenter’s hair, holding his head aloft for the slice of the blade she’d stolen from his toolkit when his back was turned.
That mistake had just cost him his life.
Her stomach lurched, and she shoved the dead man away, wishing he’d deafened her when he boxed her ears on the second—third?—day, so she couldn’t hear the back of his skull hit the concrete floor with a sickening thwack. Her hand shook, the knife threatening to slip from her mangled fingers, but once it fell, she knew she wouldn’t be able to pick it back up, and she couldn’t afford to be weaponless. Injured knuckles white around the slick rubber grip, she staggered back until her shoulders hit the far wall of her prison.
Her torture chamber.
The blood cooling on her face ratcheted her panic up a notch. Every breath was pure agony, broken ribs prodding like iron pokers against her lungs. Every square inch of skin on her back burned like hellfire. Her body was one giant bruise, her mind a tangled mess. Tears spilled down her cheeks, wet and warm—and silent.
She’d not made a sound when she slit her captor’s throat. Her family would be so proud.
The thought made her tears fall faster. A longing for home and the Queen Anne Victorian in which she’d grown up, the same longing she had buried deep for the past year, threatened to bring her to her knees, but no. No. It was just like the knife—if she fell, she’d never get back up, and eventually, someone was going to come looking for the man she had killed.
John. He’d told her his name was John, but surely that was a lie. Monsters never told the truth.
Swallowing her nausea, she stumbled toward John’s crumpled body. The thick pool of blood was unavoidable, though she shuddered when red seeped between her bare toes. Dizziness swamped her when she dropped into a crouch, the hand not holding the blade searching the pockets of John’s cargos for his key card.
Her victory upon locating the card was short-lived when she remembered what came next.
Each time John had “visited” her, it had become harder and harder to stay conscious. Everything in her hurt as she’d never hurt before. The temptation to let her eyes slide shut forever had been so strong, John singing soothingly while he disinfected his tools from their session.
Lullabies. He sang her lullabies. Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree top….
She had always remained awake long enough to watch him leave, knowing he’d be back to resume her torture. The key card was merely half the equation when it came to unlocking the door. John’s fingerprint was the other.
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock….
Dragging John’s body to the scanner mounted next to the door was not an option, not in her weakened state. Her gaze caught on his limp hand, and a tremor wracked her. There was no choice. Flattening his palm against the bloody floor, she lowered the knife.
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall….
She couldn’t help it—she vomited. But when her retching ceased, she gingerly picked up the severed finger and rose from her crouch. She almost didn’t feel the wetness underfoot anymore, which meant blessed numbness had nearly arrived. Key card first, then the bloody print on the scanner’s screen, and she held her breath.
And down will come baby, cradle and
The near-silent snick of the steel door unlatching shook John’s voice from her head. Freedom. Oh, God, freedom from this hellhole was so close, so amazingly close she was dizzy with it.
Her tears fell harder. Fuck. Why couldn’t she stop crying?
With a soft whirring noise, the door slid open, and a bunker-style hallway cast in eerie greenish light was revealed. She was underground, as suspected. A memory flashed, of John using a medical scalpel to dig the GPS tracker out from behind her ear. There had been nothing clinical or precise in how he’d wielded that blade.
Can’t have them finding you before we’re done here, little girl.
She didn’t bother looking back at his lifeless form as she eased through the door, still clutching his finger and key card. They might still prove useful in helping her escape this prison; John would not.
Adjusting her grip on the knife, she crept down the hall, ignoring the black spots clouding her vision and the vicious pounding of her head. It felt as though her brain were trying to punch its way through her skull, and she simply didn’t have time for that nonsense, because someone was watching her. Her hazy thoughts pictured the camera mounted in the corner of her cell, its little red dot blinking, always blinking. Someone would know what she’d done to John, and she refused to wait for retaliation to find her.
Run now. Collapse later.
The concrete was cold beneath her sticky, blood-soaked feet, with a chill that crept up her ankles, her calves, making her knees knock together. She was so tired. It had been at least a day since John had given her anything to drink, and he’d never provided food. As she slowly made her way down the empty corridor, her senses began to fail her, the muted buzz in her ears blocking out the faint echo of her rasping breaths. Her adrenaline rush from the kill was over.
Perhaps…perhaps she wouldn’t make it out of here, after all.
A loud sob escaped against her will.
The sounds of footsteps, heavy and booted, broke through the encroaching deafness, and then there he stood in front of her, limned in the faint glow of the bunker lights, a tall man with ice for eyes and a nasty-looking gun.
She blinked at him through her tears, her relief short-lived as a wave of bitterness
sweeping through her battered body as she saw where, precisely, that gun was aimed. Her voice cracked, breaking low and hoarse when she spoke. “Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame.”
She hummed the rest.
You give love a bad name.
