About the Book:

Jameson Hartford and his wife, Abigail, return to their home in South Carolina to claim his inheritance, the Serenity Plantation, where he is determined to free all his workers and put an end to the evils of enslavement. He encounters hostility and hatred from family, friends, an entire community, and even his wife, as he steadfastly holds to his beliefs. Through the ordeal, he meets and falls in love with Delilah, one of his female workers, which further complicates the volatile situation.
Outnumbered and alone, he must sacrifice everything as he attempts to liberate Delilah and her people, facing confrontations, treachery, and even betrayal, culminating in a final deadly showdown between precious freedom and extreme prejudice.
A Northern Rebel is a romantic adventure that touches on human emotions and forbidden love amidst the rich backdrop of the old South at the onset of the Civil War.

Read an Excerpt:

Jameson tossed and turned until the wee small hours of the

morning, unable to fall asleep. His thoughts were filled with the

events of the day: Abigail, Bethany Sue, and especially Delilah.

He felt guilty about Abigail and shocked by Bethany Sue but

couldn’t get Delilah out of his mind. She suffered so much at the

hands of unscrupulous men. He decided to rise, get dressed, and

go down to slave row to be sure she was all right. He carefully

opened the bedroom door, and being reassured that Bethany Sue

was not there, he crept along the wall and down the stairs, finally

reaching the main door. He turned the knob and pulled the door

open, letting the hot, moist air engulf him.

He started down the path then suddenly stopped, wondering

what he would say to her. Would she think he was coming to take

advantage of her, to hurt her like his brother did? He decided this

was not such a good idea and it would be in his best interest to

go back to the house. He turned to retreat but was stopped by

a voice.

“Mista Jameson?”

He turned around to see Delilah standing there; looking

absolutely beautiful bathed in the pale moonlight.

Startled, he began to ramble. “Lilah, I couldn’t sleep. I was

concerned, I mean, worried about you. I wanted to be sure you

were all right. You were so sad. I wanted to say again how sorry

I was.”

She walked toward him.

He kept on speaking. “Abigail left me. She thought you and

I… Well, uh, I mean, she’s gone back to her mother.”

Delilah said softly, “I know. I saw her leave.”

He continued nervously, “I want you to know that you

never have to fear me. I would never hurt you or force you to do

anything you didn’t want to do.”

Delilah looked seductively into his eyes and whispered, “You

wouldn’t be forcing me.”

Jameson, confused for a second, did not know what to make

of this beautiful brown woman. He stuttered. “Are you saying, I

mean, that you… and I, that is, you would—”

She softly spoke. “You’re the first white man who ever talked

nice to me or even treated me with any kindness. You saved me

from that horrible Mista Slycott, and you care enough about me

and my people to give us our freedom, even though it puts your

life in danger. You’re the most wonderful person I ever met.”

She leaned in close to him and pressed her moist, soft lips

firmly yet gently on his. He did not hesitate and kissed her in

return. She tasted so different yet so delicious. They looked deep

into each other’s souls; she could see the desire in his eyes, he

could read the need in hers. They would never forget this moment

for the rest of their lives.

Delilah joined her hand into his and slowly led him into

the barn. They crawled onto a pile of hay and began to kiss each

other passionately. She started to unbutton his shirt. He, in turn,

removed her dress. They fell into each other’s arms and gave into

the temptation and the lust. They wanted each other badly.

He ran his hands up and down across her young body, touching

her first with his fingers and then with his lips. She returned the

affection with eager anticipation, exciting him more and more with

every touch—caressing, hugging, and kissing so deeply as they united

their two bodies in love. It was a love neither one of them understood,

but that didn’t seem to matter, as his lighter tan skin and her darker

brown skin blended together into a beautiful shade of brown. Their

state of ecstasy grew stronger and stronger, finally releasing all the

pent up fear and anxiety in the beauty of the moment.

Then they lay exhausted yet content in each other’s arms,

enjoying the forbidden love each one felt for the other. They

were lost in the moment and did not care about the time until

they heard the rooster crow. Reality was calling them back. They

hastily got dressed. He couldn’t resist a last kiss before letting her

leave, hoping this was not the end. They made no promises to

each other, for they both knew the risks and perils of their tryst.

However, he just couldn’t erase the big grin he had on his face as

he made his way back to the house. They couldn’t help turning

around, looking back at each other and smiling one more time,

wishing the moment did not have to end. He could still taste her

sweet scent in his mouth and vowed to himself to preserve the

memory for as long as possible until he could taste her once again.

Delilah was also smiling and dreaming of a love she knew

could not be. She slowly sauntered back to slave row only to find

the other slaves in turmoil.

And will Kaylan have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her city and the man she loves?

My Review:

I'm going to keep my review short and sweet as the descriptions above do their jobs quite well.

Kaylan, Geth, Sierra, and Elijah are members of the Amaranthine, an underground group of people that try to keep the Order in check. When tragedy strikes, Kaylan walks away from everyone and everything. When Kaylan's assistance is requested by Sierra one year later, she returns home to chaos and a nefarious plot that comes complete with the sting of betrayal. As Kaylan and her friends attempt to unravel the plot to take over Ormere, Kaylan discovers things that change her entire life.

The Amaranthine Chronicles is a 3-part urban fantasy trilogy compiled into a complete box set. Books one and two end with cliffhangers so it was nice to have the whole series at my fingertips. The series is engaging from the start. Full of action and mystery, the reader will become fully immersed in the world created by Tiffany Shand. The author does a fantastic job weaving the books full of twists and turns.

I enjoyed the characters and world building that takes place over the span of the three books. The interactions between Kaylan and Elijah are realistic as both friends, partners, and lovers. The magical abilities that each of the friends possess are unique and explained well.  The author did a remarkable job writing a story filled with action, adventure, romance, suspense, treachery, and more.

I voluntarily reviewed an uncorrected ARC of The Amaranthine Chronicles.

Read an Excerpt:

Cleopatra was utterly trapped. She longed to close her eyes and block him out, but fear of the unknown kept them wide open. The man had no weapon, couldn’t possibly mean to harm her. Except, would he really need a weapon? She couldn’t fight him, wouldn’t even know where to begin.

He studied her closely, and when his head tilted slightly, she noticed every bit of his focus fixated on her neck. Not a murderer. He wanted to mark her, to bite her neck, leave the wound to heal and forever bind her to him. This was why daughters of the aristocracy were kept under a tight watch. The mark, unbreakable and indisputable, would give this man access to her family’s wealth and prestige, and bind her to him until death.

He reached for her, head descending to her neck. Cleopatra quickly covered his target with both hands. Tears gathered in her eyes, sorrow distorted her voice. “I don’t want this. Please, don’t hurt me.”

The man rocked back as if she’d smacked him, and for the first time since he’d appeared, he looked at her face. His eyes met hers and didn’t look away as he brought his hand to her cheek and brushed away a tear. He saw her, truly saw her, and the adoration in his eyes sent a completely different shimmy down her spine.

In one step, he crowded her, pressing his cheek against hers. “Could never hurt you. My angel,” his captivating voice crooned, so close to her ear. He drew in a deep breath, his face buried in her hair. Then he whispered, “My Cleo.”

She gasped. The shortened version of her name on his lips sounded strangely intimate, as though he’d known her for years. The warmth rolling off his body kept her intensely aware of his close proximity, and she held her breath, waiting for his next move to prove his intent. He didn’t bite her, didn’t hurt her, and the sincere affection in his gentle touch left her so very confused. Any other man would have bitten her, taken advantage of the opportunity laid before him. But this man? His intent to bite her had been unmistakable, and he’d stopped because he…cared for her? She didn’t understand.

His hand slipped from her face, dropped to his side, and he staggered back, moving as if through a dream. He still watched her, but he swayed, that intense focus suddenly gone. The man crumpled to the floor with a heavy thud.

Dragging in a long, shaky breath, she blinked away tears she’d been staring through. A few more deep breaths, and she allowed herself to really look at him. He lay on his side, knees slightly curled, motionless. Something was wrong with him. People didn’t just fall over.

Gripping the railing, which had swiftly become her personal anchor, she pointed her foot and gingerly nudged his arm. When he didn’t move, she put more force behind the kick. Cleopatra jumped as his hand fell away from his ribs, thumping onto the floor. Blood coated his fingers.

He was bleeding? She’d missed the injury completely. The saturated, glistening spot had been hidden under his hand and camouflaged by his black button-up shirt. He’d been so close and she hadn’t… She glanced down at herself. Blood streaked across her pale blue gown, more evidence of his severe injury.

The elevator doors slid open. Oh God, if someone were to see them together in this state, what would they think? What would happen to her, or to him? Her heart hammered, panic flooding through her as she peeked out into the main corridor of Sterling.

The white, gold-trimmed corridor stretched on, empty. The elevator doors slid shut, and there it would stay, unless called. She might not have much time. Peering down at the unconscious man, she tried to fit the puzzle pieces together.

She’d mistaken his intent. He’d needed sustenance badly, and now he bled out, dying at her feet. Because of who she was, he refused to harm her, to take from her. How did he have the willpower to block his instincts from taking over, to stop from feeding?

Whoever he was, she had to save him. She dropped to her knees and pushed away any lingering fear under her newfound resolve. Tugging his shirt from his dark jeans, she searched for the injury. In the midst of his blood-slicked skin, the wound gaped open between his ribs. It looked like he’d been slashed, the nasty gash a result of being on the wrong end of a knife. Just a guess. She had no experience with this sort of villainy.

Her hand flew to her mouth. The murderer running loose in Galbraith used a knife. Could this man be yet another victim?

“Can you hear me? What happened to you? Who did this?” She awkwardly patted his whiskered cheek. His eyes fluttered open, then shut again.

“Balinese is safe.” His voice trembled, his words slurred without support from his shallow breath. “Paris. Demons.”

Cleopatra’s fingers fumbled as she pulled away his shirt collar. Several teeth-like gouges in his shredded skin oozed blood near his collarbone. Demons. They’d almost made a meal of him, and he was a bloody mess, but the real danger came from that knife wound. It looked deep, and if he’d been damaged internally and lost too much blood, he might not survive.

He needed blood now. She bit her wrist and pressed it against his mouth. His lips didn’t part, and his body refused to respond. A rivulet of blood slid down his cheek. He’d die if she didn’t fight for him.

Backlit by the sun, his profile was interesting, despite the bushy lower half of his face. Or maybe because of it. He looked like something you’d see stamped into an ancient coin—hard and noble. The scene came easily into focus: clad in something stained and torn, wading into the thick of battle with his men, sword in hand, face smeared with enemy blood, and teeth bared in some primal war cry. Her hands came to life, itching for a camera.
Then she blinked and emerged to see him as he was: a filthy redneck with a rug on his face. He was intimidating, to say the least. Not the kind of guy she’d choose to work in her yard—not looking all roughed up like he did.
But this new phase of life was about taking back what Joey had stolen. It was about courage, and because this guy was so intimidating, Uma decided to face him head- on. Show no fear. Another rule for this new self that she was constantly reinventing: no more letting men intimidate her.
“Help me up?” she asked.
After a brief hesitation, he complied. His grasp was rough and solid, ridged with calluses in places and polished smooth in others. For a moment, after pulling her up to stand, he didn’t let go of her hand. Instead, he turned it over and eyed the crescent her teeth had left behind.
She fought the urge to snatch it away.
He raised his brows but finally let her go without a word. Burning with the need to put some distance between them, she took a hurried step back.
“Thanks,” she said as he squatted down to scratch Squeak roughly under the chin. The dog’s eyes closed in ecstasy.
Forcing herself to steady her nerves, Uma caught his gaze and held it. He was even scarier without the sun behind him, skin marred by a shiny, white scar along his hairline and a dark bruise on a cheek already peppered with errant beard hairs. His nose was crooked and thick, no doubt broken in a barroom brawl or something equally disreputable. She envisioned him in a smoky basement, duking it out for some seedy underground boxing title. Carved squint lines surrounded eyes that were a cool blue.
Or…oh. No. She realized with a start that his left eye was blue and the right was dark gold. She was instantly thrown off-kilter. Which one was she supposed to focus on? She blinked and turned aside, uncomfortable with the way he so effortlessly unsettled her.
“I’ve…” he rumbled, coming up out of the squat to tower over her again. She waited for him to continue.
“You’ve…?” she finally asked after the silence had stretched too long. She wondered if she was as off-putting to him as he was to her. 6 7
“Ive. It’s my name. Short for Ivan.”
“Oh. I’m Uma.” She gave him her real name without thinking. “You mow the lawn here?”
“You could say that.” His eyes crinkled. What little she could see of his mouth turned up into a surprisingly warm smile. “Figure I might as well mow her lawn while I’m doin’ mine.”
She looked at the house behind him. “That’s your place?”
Her surprise must have been obvious, but he didn’t react, just gave a single, brief nod.
“Wow. Nice.” The house was nice. Really nice. Incongruously…civilized. He looked like the kind of guy you’d find chopping wood by his cabin in the boondocks, not maintaining the lawn of his lovely old farmhouse.
It was straight out of Southern Living, nicer than some of the places she’d photographed.
The caricature she’d formed in her head of this man melted partially away to reveal something a little softer, less defined. It didn’t jibe inside of her, but she’d been running on stereotypes and first impressions and messed-up wrong impressions for so long that her instincts clearly needed a reset. Another thing to add to the growing list of upgrades for Uma 2.0.
He nodded, face serious, but she thought she could detect pride beneath the gruff exterior.
She caught sight of a bright-red tricycle in the drive beside a clunky Ford pickup. Kids. Probably a wife. Her perception shifted yet again, and he didn’t seem half as scary as he had a moment before. Wow, she couldn’t straighten her life out at all, and this guy seemed to have his shit together. So much for first impressions.
Uma briefly wondered what he’d look like without all that fur on his face.
She took in the house, the trike, the coziness of this sweet mountain town. A town so small that elderly ladies hired you right over the phone without even asking for references.
That reminded her of why she was here: the ad. Maybe not such a sweet town after all.
“Well, I’d better get to it.” She kept her hands in her pockets, not wanting to risk another touch of his rough skin.
“Yeah. Don’t wanna piss her off.” Was that a joke?
She gave Squeak a quick pat on the head and turned away from man and dog. His voice stopped her after a couple of steps.
“Hey, Uma.” It came out rough, and he cleared his throat. “You ever need a break, come on over and see us. Have a beer.”
“Oh. Sure. Thanks.” Us, he’d said. Yep, married.
She shot a last look at the house over his shoulder, thinking she might even be willing to marry a guy like that for such a great house. Oh well. Maybe she and his wife would become friends.
A friend. That might be nice.
When she got back to the porch, something had changed. Was the gap in the curtains a little wider? Was it possible the woman had witnessed her panic attack? Strike one against Uma if she had.
The lawn mower started up again somewhere behind the house.
Uma took a deep breath in, blew it out hard, made a fist, and pounded.

There are no roads, tunnels, or bridges linking Earth to Beyond. Ships, airplanes, or rockets can’t transport us there. The only passage is through the Emerald Portal, the gateway between our two worlds. And the only one who can grant access to the portal is the queen of Beyond—my boyfriend’s mom.

My name is Cordelia Hammer and I’m a demon. Not the human, teen variety, but an actual supernatural. My father is the demon sovereign of Paris. Each city has its own council made up of royal representatives who oversee the supernatural activity of their kind within their jurisdiction. Currently, I’m apprenticing for King Sebastian, the demon sovereign of London.

As I wondered what Jagger was talking about, digesting his words — Mother insists that the new fae princess must be born at the palace — a green mist appeared in the corner of the bedroom of the Seattle hotel suite where Jagger and I were staying.

“I suggest we both throw on some clothes,” Jagger muttered, picking up his black jeans from the floor. “It would be unfortunate to appear in front of my mother in our birthday suits.”

“Huh?”

“Hurry up, Cordelia. We only have a few minutes before we get sucked into that portal.”

“Is that the Emerald Portal?” I looked at it in awe as the mist morphed into a tunnel. I took a step toward it to peek inside.

“No!” Jagger pulled me back. “Get dressed, please.”

“Into what?” I had no idea what the weather was like in Beyond or whether an audience with the queen of Beyond required formal attire. Jagger had thrown on his favorite black jeans and white T-shirt, his black motorcycle jacket in hand.

“Anything,” he said. “Something comfortable. And make sure it’s very warm as it’s always cold in Beyond—freezing, in fact. I’ll call GRIP in the meantime to let them know that I won’t be in today.”

GRIP—the Global Retrieval and Intelligence Program—that’s where Jagger worked. GRIP had been founded following the attacks on the international supernatural communities during Code Uprising to monitor and curtail any subversive activity. It had become the authoritative supernatural agency regulating the global communities. Well, except for the subterranean troll population who seemed to be completely unregulated. Jagger was part of the GRIP Tactical Combat Force. I was pretty sure that they wouldn’t be happy with him taking a day off right in the middle of the most critical time in modern supernatural history, with a noncompliant supernatural moving into the White House. Plus, just days ago, we’d captured Katerina Miller—the monster responsible for the last spate of global massacres—and were waiting to question her.
